new york times article

The article was mainly about how teachers believe that today's technology is shortening their students attention spans and making them less willing to learn. Apparently technology is affecting student's academic skills. I do kind of agree that it is shortening student's attention spans and making them uninterested in learning. There are teachers who have noticed a decline in their students attention spans and seem less creative and engaged in their work. I mainly agree with some of this because I'm actually doing a research paper right now on how the Internet and other types of media affect the way children learn and socialize. I've learned that children do seem to do better in school and are more willing to interact with other kids when they aren't given too much time on the computer or TV. However, the different types of media can help children learn and improve academically if they play educational games and go to educational/learning websites. For example, if someone who doesn't have a computer was given one and went to educational websites, they would improve a lot more academically than a child who was given a computer and went to nothing but random gaming and music websites and other things like that.

  1. I agree with your comment about some types of media being able to help children learn. Also, i think that some video games out there make you think critically to solve the problem/mission.

    1. Eh. I guess so. I played Golden Sun once. It took me forever to figure out some of the puzzles in the game.

    2. I also agree that some games might be helpful and enjoyable at the same time, but I don't agree that mixing those elements with violence is a good thing. What kinds of games do you play that involve critical thinking?

    3. i like to play strategy games on the computer that all you do is just battle for land, like in the middle ages, however; you have to be sure you think long and hard about the move you are going to take because if you make a wrong move you could lose your land and all of your soldiers. Also, it teaches you how to budget money because you have to buy all of your tactics such as soldiers, catapults, or add ons to your giant castle.

  2. What other facts have you uncovered in your research about children and screen time?

  3. I agree with you that some games effect people positively and some effect people negatively, however, since I try not to spend much time in the different types of media that are out there. By this fact I would say that I don't really know much about video games or other things like this.

    1. I don't know much about games either. I have a wii and a 3ds, but I hardly ever play on the wii and all I ever do is draw pictures on my 3ds.

  4. I've played online chess and card games. Oh, and I've learned that about 85% of 8-18 year olds spend almost as much time in front of things like computers, TV, and gaming devices as they do in school.
